Communications manager for a major environment-economy initiative

Are you a communications entrepreneur? Do you want to help build an environmentally sustainable economic future? And work with prominent leaders from business, economics and politics?

Background:

An independent, high-profile Commission affiliated with two Canadian universities is exploring policies to strengthen Canada’s environmental and economic future. The Commissioners include Canada’s top economic experts, and an associated Advisory Board is made up of prominent leaders and states-people. Designing and implementing an effective communications strategy is essential for maximizing the Commission’s impact.

Summary:

An experienced Communications Manager (CM) is required to lead and coordinate a range of activities over a 3-5 year period. The CM will work closely with the Commission’s management, researchers, and a major public-affairs advisory firm to develop a dynamic communications strategy. The CM will have responsibility for implementing this strategy, including overseeing design and production of policy reports, info-graphics, and other communications products; overseeing website development and social media outputs; developing and implementing a strategy to disseminate the Commission’s key messages; and coordinating media-relations activities and personnel. The CM will also liaise closely with communications teams in partner organizations.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Development of a dynamic communications strategy

  • Collaborate closely with external strategic communications advisors
  • Develop framing and messaging for the Commission as well as its specific publications
  • Identify key audiences, and develop strategies to disseminate messages

2. Design and production of publications and products

  • Lead the process for creating reports, info-graphics, and other products
  • Identify and manage key milestones and timelines for publication process
  • Manage external production consultants for translation, editing, graphic design, etc.

3. Oversee report releases and other Commission events

  • Execute strategies to maximize the profile and impact of reports, releases and events
  • Identify key media opportunities for disseminating the Commission’s messages
  • Work with selected commissioners and advisors to be effective messengers

4. Website design and maintenance

  • Coordinate the design and development of the Commission’s website
  • Ensure website is regularly updated with new reports and information
  • Track and report website analytics

5. Social media and network building

  • Develop and implement the Commission’s social media strategy
  • Cultivate social media networks
  • Develop networks of potential supporters and allies

6. Inter-organization coordination

  • Work closely with media-relations specialist
  • Present communication updates to Commission members
  • Oversee the production of regular reports to funders

Qualifications:

Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in communications, journalism, public policy, or related field;
  • Three or more years of related work experience;
  • Experience in strategic communications and in identifying audiences, developing strategies, and crafting messages for achieving communications objectives;
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines;
  • Experience with strategic use of social media and electronic communication;
  • Experience in communicating technical material to broad audiences;
  • Bilingual in English and French (written and spoken) is an asset;
  • Experience in environment-economy policy issues is an asset;

Details:

  • This is a full-time position, starting as soon as possible.
  • The Commission will last 3-5 years, with the possibility of continued employment with university afterwards
  • The position will be located either in Ottawa or Montreal
  • Salary will be commensurate with experience
