Course Description:

At its core, this course is designed to explore the ways communication shapes individual and societal choices relative to the environment, as well as the state of the natural world itself. Using 20th century U.S. advocacy and activism as a lens, we will examine the range of communicative tactics utilized by concerned publics, grassroots groups, corporations and institutions, and historic and contemporary social movements in the public sphere. Together, we will analyze a variety of environmental issues, and evaluate the practices with which stakeholders attempt to influence environmental behavior and shape policy outcomes. In doing so, we will hone our skills as change agents advocating for just sustainability.
