Industrial Past, Sustainable Present: Transforming Chicago's Urban Spaces

Please join us for this intriguing pre-conference to be held at the National Communication Association Convention in Chicago Wednesday, November 14 from 9:30 - 4:30.

Chicago is a city beset with a host of environmental challenges. From environmental racism to food deserts the residents of Chicago must either learn to live with these problems or engage in activism that will bring about a solution. Conceived through discussions by members of NCA's Environmental Communication Division, this pre-conference "field trip" explores organizations and communities that are successfully addressing the challenges they face. Participants will travel to the Windy City's Back of the Yards and Pilsen neighborhoods to examine on-site activist tactics, communication efforts, the battles each neighborhood has won, the obstacles each has encountered, and the way in which Chicagoans have transformed space in an effort to improve the local environment.
