Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport/Staunton, VA (SHD) is the closest commercial service airport to Harrisonburg. It offers daily flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) with Contour Airlines/American Airlines.  Flights can be booked from around the world on American and American’s One World partners with connections in Charlotte to fly seamlessly into the Shenandoah Valley.

Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport is located about 20 minutes from the James Madison University campus. The airport is providing free shuttle service for conference attendees to and from conference accommodation locations. To book the shuttle, contact the airport’s Shuttle Coordinator, Debbie McAllister, at shdshuttle at flyshd dot com or call (540) 234-8304 x5 and let Ms. McAllister know you are attending the IECA’s conference at JMU.

Heather Ream, Dir. of Marketing and Communications for the airport, has graciously agreed to assist conference attendees if they need help researching flights into Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport. Heather Ream can be reached at: hream at flyshd dot com.

While Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD) is by far the most convenient way to attend COCE 2023 by air, there are several other options attendees may want to consider. However, we recommend waiting until February to compare flight costs. We also encourage attendees to remember that while flights to Shenandoah may be slightly more expensive than other options, we have made every effort to keep lodging and food costs as affordable as possible and we believe the convenience of the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD) may be worth the extra expense.

The conference will also offer a shuttle bus from Washington Dulles International Airport to the JMU campus on Sunday, June 4.  The shuttle will depart Washington Dulles at 8:00PM on Sunday, June 4.  The cost of conference shuttle is $25.00 per person. Those who use this service should use the Virginia Breeze Bus to return to Washington Dulles.

Harrisonburg and the JMU campus are served by the Virginia Breeze Bus, which makes two round trips a day from Washington DC to Harrisonburg. This may be an ideal option for those attendees wishing to spend a few days in Washington DC before or after the conference.

Harrisonburg is a relatively small college town. Most parts of the campus and city that conference attendees will be interested in are bike/pedestrian-friendly. We are currently attempting to arrange bicycle rental options for attendees, although this has proven to be more difficult that we had hoped as the local bicycle shops sold most their rental stock due to supply shortages caused by the pandemic. We will keep you updated.

Public Transportation:

Harrisonburg’s public bus system is seasonal based on the rhythms of campus life. As soon as the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (HDPT) releases its summer 2023 bus schedule we will make those details available to conference attendees.
